Legend of St Elizabeth of Hungary:
Also known as Elizabeth of Thuringia, Elizabeth of Hungary was a princess of the Kingdom of Hungary. But life was not easy for the young royal, as her mother was murdered when Elizabeth was only six years old.
After her arranged marriage to Ludwig IV, Elizabeth began to pray for comfort and happiness in life. Together they raised three children, one of whom became a nun and abbess. They used their wealth to improve the lives of the poor and sick.
Elizabeth married at the age of 14 and was widowed at the age of 20. After her husband’s death, she reclaimed her dowry and used the money to build a hospital and personally serve the sick. She died in 1231 at the age of 24, becoming a symbol of Christian charity, and was canonized on May 25, 1235. She is revered as a saint by the Catholic Church. She was an early member of the Third Order of St. Francis and is now revered as the patron saint of that order.
During her marriage, Elizabeth did countless good deeds and lived a simple and pious Christian life despite her royal status. She distributed alms throughout the territory and even gave state robes and ornaments to the poor.
Her feast day is November 17. She is the patron saint of bakers, beggars, brides, charity, and against child death.
