Thousands of people flocked to the Crossroads of the World in Manhattan to celebrate the victory. George Mendonca, a navy soldier who had just returned from leave in the Philippines, was dating his future wife Rita Petri. But he spotted a woman in a nurse’s uniform, which reminded him of the nurse who rescued hundreds of Americans from the water. He suddenly grabbed the woman, held her in his arms, and kissed her.
This moment was captured by Alfred Eisenstaedt, a famous photographer for Life magazine, and became a symbol of joy in the hearts of Americans at the end of the war.
About Unconditional Surrender
